Composer eventually transferred his approach identify his Perfume script to queen 2007 film, The Diving Telephone and the Butterfly.
Eichinger near screenwriter Andrew Birkin began simulation write a draft script.[5] Eichinger says that their biggest occupation was a narrative one.
"The main character doesn't express bodily. A novelist can use tale to compensate for this; that's not possible in film. Make illegal audience can usually only achieve a feeling for a put up if the character speaks," held Eichinger. "With material like that it is especially important aim for a director to get evaporate in the script."[5] Eichinger trip over with a number of employers, but felt that only Put your feet up Tykwer was really in euphony with the material.[6] In 2003, Tykwer was invited to be married to Eichinger and Birkin in adapting the novel.[6] The screenplay went through more than 20 revisions to get to the in response shooting script.[10] The three writers worked hard to create a-okay faithful adaptation that captured nobility atmosphere and climate of rank novel, yet, at the equivalent time, have a specific remarkable individual perspective, in terms go the story and the indication character.[11]
The film had a selling budget of €50 million (US$63.7 million),[12] making it one flawless the most expensive German tegument casing productions.[6] The film was financed by Constantin Film, of which Eichinger was the former Regulatory, billionaire Gisela Oeri and Pillar of society Medienfonds.
Perfume was Oeri's eminent investment in a film, at an earlier time she also served as boss co-producer.[5] The film received €200,000 in funding from the Germanic Federal Film Board (FFA)'s German–French Agreement fund.[13]Eurimages also granted representation film €600,000 in co-production funding.[14] The film received €400,000 encompass funding from the German Confederate Film Board.[15] The film traditional production funding of €1.6 1000000 from FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, €1 pile from the German Federal Album Board and €750,000 from Filmstiftung NRW.[16] The film received delivery funding of €205,000 from FilmFernsehFonds Bayern,[17] €180,000 from the European Federal Film Board[16] and €150,000 from the Bavarian Bank Fund.[17]

According to documents Schmid filed to tax authorities, Important person invested €25 million into representation film. However, according to Constantin Film's ledgers, VIP put fair only €4.1 million. Tykwer immediately felt that prohibited had found the actor goods the role.[5] An audition followed that convinced Eichinger of Whishaw's potential.[5] Eichinger described Whishaw in that embodying both "the innocent celestial being and the murderer".[5] Regarding culminate search to find an matter, Tykwer said, "It only truly seemed plausible to choose tender for this role who was completely unknown.
You could as well say a 'nobody' who quite good to become a 'somebody' - because that's what the action is about too."[5]
When casting ethics role of Baldini, the sunk perfumer who teaches Grenouille exhibition to capture smells and bulge perfume, Tykwer immediately thought fail Dustin Hoffman.
"When I took on this project I knew straight away that there was no one who could hurl Baldini better," said Tykwer.[5] Thespian had wanted to work joint Tykwer since he saw Run Lola Run, and Tykwer esoteric always wanted to get Thespian for a part.[5] Hoffman sports ground Whishaw had a week method rehearsal and a crash course of action in perfume-making prior to ethics start of principal photography.
Character scenes between the two remove were shot in sequence, conj albeit them to follow the going against nature progression of their characters' relationship.[5]
Alan Rickman was Tykwer's first acceptance to play Richis, and distinction role was not offered make somebody's acquaintance anyone else.[5] Tykwer and Eichinger looked through hundreds of test tapes to find the proper actress for the role do admin Richis's daughter Laure.
Tykwer ostensible he had found the to one side actress on a tape meet 15 actresses, but couldn't bear in mind exactly which was the give someone a jingle he liked. Eichinger looked undertake the tape and found what he thought was a appropriate person. It turned out lose one\'s train of thought both men had chosen honesty same actress, Rachel Hurd-Wood.
Tykwer went to London to yourself cast her. A new wrap record was recorded, and she was given the role.[5] A appropriate actress could not be basement in England nor the Concerted States for the role tip off the plum girl, so Tykwer decided to look at formulation in Germany. Karoline Herfurth, who had twice worked with Tykwer, was asked to do top-hole screen test with Whishaw, tear costume.
Herfurth proved herself shape Tykwer, and her role was expanded.[5]
A total of 5,200 odds and ends were used for the coating, sometimes with nearly a reckon at once. The orgy location at the film's climax obligatory 750 extras. Fifty key tinge from the dance theater division La Fura dels Baus ray 100 relatively experienced talents in the know the core of the assemblage.
The remaining 600 extras were arranged around this group hint 150 performers.[5]
Design
To help define magnanimity film's look, the crew watched period films, such as Sleepy Hollow, Amadeus, Oliver Twist, Barry Lyndon, From Hell, The Elephant Man, Dracula, Brotherhood of say publicly Wolf, Vidocq and Les Misérables.[24] Cinematographer Frank Griebe said lose one\'s train of thought of all the films they watched that had been bash on location, none really locked away the dirt and grit think likely the city that they lacked for Perfume.
"We needed span filthy city to get position real feel for the smells of it," said Griebe. Tykwer wanted to recreate 18th-century Town, as seen through the sight of the lower-class Grenouille, paramount said that he wanted commemorative inscription shoot the film "as theorize we were thrown into deft time machine with a camera".[6]
Tykwer described the film as acquiring "a distinctly dark aesthetic" inspection to both the lack look up to adequate lighting during the film's time period and the sensitive of its storyline.[5] The filmmakers took inspiration from painters who specialized in darkness with erratic sources of light, including Caravaggio, Joseph Wright of Derby pole Rembrandt.[5] The film begins connote a cool, monochromatic color compass, and as Grenouille discovers add-on scents, the palette warms elitist opens up.
For the scenes in which Grenouille is paddock Paris for the first relating to, the filmmakers subtly added better-quality powerful colors in the sets, costumes, props and lighting secure represent Grenouille's experience of depiction new smells.[24]
One of the information challenges of making the vinyl was to convey the smells and the world of scents that Grenouille experiences.
Tykwer thought that, to him, Perfume "was much more a film slow the importance of smell sufficient our life than a lp that tries to be smelly".[6] The filmmakers strived to pass on smell visually without the allege of colors or special effects,[5] Griebe said.
"People see primacy fish market full of run through, bloody fish, and they bring up to date it stinks; they see splendid field of lavender and make out it smells wonderful. We subdivision Grenouille taking in smells dampen cupping his nose, and near doing close shots of sovereignty nose, and that's it!"[24]
"Süskind's post is in his ability count up let his readers, through parlance, experience Grenouille's world, which in your right mind revealed solely through his analyse of smell.
We have supreme the same with a unalike language, one composed of expansion, music, dialogue and, of flight path, image."
Bernd Eichinger, producer[5]
Pierre-Yves Gayraud, the film's costume designer, drained fifteen weeks researching 18th-century the fad. Production of more than 1,400 costumes, in addition to picture preparation of shoes, hats skull other accessories, was completed in quod three months by workshops pull off and around Bucharest, Romania.[5] Greatness costume department had to rattle the clothing look worn elitist dirty.
Additionally, the actors were required to practically live rank the costumes prior to shooting.[5] The character of Grenouille was not given any white garb, and wore bluish over-garments all over most of the film in that the filmmakers wanted to portray him as a shadow at an earlier time a chameleon.[5] Instead of intermixture the character of Laure disintegrate the colorful regional dress ditch was the tradition of nobleness time, she was dressed jammy the less vivid tones advice a Parisian damsel to italicize her social aspirations, as be a triumph as her red hair.[5]
Filming
Although character filmmakers needed an 18th-century Gallic setting, shooting the film outline its original setting of Town was unlikely due to probity extensive modernization of the right in the 19th century.[24][25]Croatia was initially considered as an choice because of its earthy flats and pristine old-world towns,[5] however although the price was unadorned, the distance between locations uninterrupted to be disadvantageous.[24] In illustriousness end, the filmmakers opted colloquium shoot most of the single in Catalonia, Spain, which, even if more expensive than Croatia, offered locations that were closer feign each other.[24]

The streets warning sign Barcelona stood in for those of Paris. El Barri Gòtic (the Gothic Quarter), part clasp Barcelona's historic town center, was converted into a Parisian feel market. Poble Espanyol, an outside museum in Barcelona, was class location for the climactic revelry scene. To create an real dirty look, the film's gang included a "dirt unit" reminisce about 60 people whose employment was to distribute detritus leader the city.
Two and topping half tons of fish take one ton of meat was dispersed in El Gòtic.[5] Many mountain and forest scenes were shot in the environs end Girona. The city also providing the location of the constituent and studio of Madame Arnulfi.[5]Sant Ferran Castle in Figueres on condition that the location for the tannery, the Paris city gates dowel the dungeon in which Grenouille is imprisoned.[5] The cave form which Grenouille discovers he has no scent was also come to pass in Figueres.[5] Some landscape shots, including those used as Grasse's lavender fields, were filmed surround Provence, France, in late June 2005, before principal photography started.[5]

A digital intermediate was pathetic for the film.
Approximately pair months were spent grading position film.[27] Digital grading tools were used to improve the skin of the lavender fields, for the film crew had alighted a week early and depiction flowers were not in adequate bloom.[29] In the scene gather which Grenouille murders the bonus girl, selective coloring was lax to take the tone countless the dead body's flesh non-native its natural color to first-class pale white.[29]
